COZUMEL AND THE KARST

San Gervacio ruins in Cozumel, Mexico.Cozumel (place of the shadows) is located in the Mexican Caribbean, Measuring 53 km long and 14 km wide, it´s the largest Mexican Island.

Cozumel is a first class destination for Cave Diving activities. The island is surrounded by Beautiful Coral Reefs formations that makes the paradise for SCUBA Divers and Technical divers. Another interesting aspect of Cozumel is the type of rock (limestone) the island has. The Island is considered a very young, formed during the Cenozoic era 65 million years ago.

This flat terrain was once an ancient coral reef, but as the sea level dropped The Island and the all Yucatan Peninsula emerged. Cozumel Island is a huge, porous shelf of calcium carbonate sedimentary rock consisting of dead coral deposits, shells and the break down of lime left behind from decomposition. The limestone that makes up deposits near the Coast Ranges in age from the Pleistocene and Holocene periods.

Cozumel MapThe island encompasses 392 square Kilometers of Karts (limestone) Terrain lowlands perforated with incredible filled water subterranean Anchialines caves. There are no surface rivers or streams and the limestone is so soft that rain percolates easily through the ground.

Cenotes are natural wells that evolve when the limestone weakens and collapses, forming Karst Windows to the underground aquifer. During your Cavern or Cave diving activities you will be surprised of the beautiful Speleothemes (stalactites, stalagmites, Columns) that are created and formed 12 thousand years ago when all this underwater caves where dry.
