WILMA HURRICANE REPORT
As everybody knows, Wilma hit Cozumel very strong during a 60 hour period, with sustained winds of 300 Km per hour. As result it destroyed three international cruise piers, hotels, beach clubs and dive operations. Today after two months of this natural disaster Cozumel is standing and back to normal.
The cave diving activities did not suffer that much from the impact of Wilma.
For a couple weeks the water clarity was not that good, the paths to the sites closed. Today after many days of hard and dedicated volunteers as Mateo Gutierrez, Fernando Paulin and myself we have reopened the accesses to the most common caves in the island.
During our cave dives after Wilma we observed a couple changes only in the distribution of sediments, and a couple broken guidelines that immediately were reinstalled.
The only physical damage I saw is from the entrance of Chankanaab Cave from the sea, a small section collapsed, but still a good and safe place to dive.
All the main lines and the common circuits and traverses from each site have been evaluated for safe cave navigation procedures.
Cozumel Caves are safe and well conserved for Cave Diving activities.
Thanks to the NSS/CDS for donating new warning stop signs. All the Chankanaab stop signs were destroyed and these new ones will be
reinstalled as soon as possible.
